Alfred Russel Wallace - John Matthews

John Matthews, a local historian, will present an illustrated talk on the life of Alfred Russel Wallace and a lottery funded project to raise awareness of Wallace locally. Wallace is chiefly remembered for his association with Charles Darwin in proposing the theory of the evolution of species by natural selection, and he lived in Grays from 1872 to 1876.

Winter Bird Watch - Tollesbury Wick

Wrap up warm, bring binoculars and flask, to join us for a walk around Tollesbury Wick looking for winter birds. With the backdrop of the infamous red lightship, we may see Owls and Harriers over the marshes with Waders and Ducks in the Estuary. 

Meet in Wickford at 9.00am.

Marguerita Wilson, from Southend Beekeepers, will talk to us about the daily lives of our honey bees and the products of the hive such as beeswax and royal jelly.

Inter-Society Quiz

Great Wakering are the hosts this year at the Great Wakering Community Centre, The Old School, High St, Great Wakering, SS3 0HX. We were runners-up last year so come along to support our team and see if we can regain the trophy.

Simon, a County recorder for molluscs, will present a talk on this very large and varied Phylum of invertebrates, which includes marine, freshwater and terrestrial species.

Bluebells & Molluscs - Hanningfield Reservoir (Fishing Lodge Entrance.) 

A joint visit with the Essex Field Club and Simon Taylor. Hopefully, bluebells will be flowering and we will also search for Molluscs with expert help.

Orchids - Grays Gorge SSSI

A guided walk by the ranger Dean Williams. This former industrial quarry is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest and contains 9 species of orchid and other wild flowers, along with reptiles such as adders, slow worms and grass snakes, as well as many species of birds, butterflies, bees and beetles. 

Meet in Wickford at 9.30am.

Longest Day Walk - Galleywood Common

Join us for an evening walk around Galleywood Common, followed by refreshments at the Horse & Groom Pub, Horse and Groom Lane, Chelmsford, CM2 8PL. This is a joint outing with the Basildon Natural History Society. 

Meet in the Galleywood Common North Car Park at 7.30pm.

Moth Night & Stargazing - Wick Country Park

A joint event with the Friends of Wick Country Park. We will set out lamps to attract moths and have telescopes available if we get a clear sky. 

Meet at the Pavilion from 9.00pm onwards.

Autumn Migration - Abberton Reservoir

It’s the time of year when almost anything can turn up at this excellent bird watching site. Most summer birds will still be around with butterflies and dragonflies also on the wing.

The Changing Fortunes of Essex Moths - Dougal Urquhart

Dougal Urquhart, coordinator of the Essex Moth Group, will illustrate the current status of moths in Essex and which species are increasing and which are in decline.

Fungi Foray – Hall and Coombe Woods, Langdon Hills Country Park

This is a joint outing with the Essex Field Club and Basildon Natural History Society. Come along and collect specimens for the experts to identify.

Celebrate the festive season with fellow members. All visitors welcome to learn more about our society and enjoy the free tasty buffet! A quiz or short talk will also take place.

All indoor meetings will be held in St Andrews Church Hall, 11 London Road, Wickford, Essex, SS12 0AN.

There is adequate parking in front and behind the Church. 

Teas and Coffees are available during the interval.

Outdoor Meetings 
Unless otherwise specified, outings will depart from the Wickford Central Council Car Park (next to the Co-Op) at the times shown over. 
Please note that times will vary according to the location of the meeting. There are sometimes spare places in cars travelling to the different locations, so anyone needing transport can normally get a lift. In case of a change of venue or timings, it is advisable to contact Martin or Marie Singleton on the phone numbers detailed for confirmation of all outdoor meetings. 

We aim to arrive back in Wickford at around 1pm but this is of course, approximate and very much dependant on the wildlife we see on the day.
