The invasion of the UK by Alien Water Plants - Dr Ken Adams.

Ken Adams, Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland County Recorder for higher plants has been documenting the spread of alien water plants in Essex for the last 40 years and their impact on the extermination of our native water plants and clogging up of our waterways.

Winter Bird Watch - Danbury Country Park.

Wrap up warm, bring a flask and join us for a walk around Danbury Country Park looking for winter birds. We may see Redwings and Fieldfares in the woods and possibly Goosander on the lakes.

We are hosting the event this year at Christ Church Hall, Gateway Service Road, Wickford, SS12 9FW. We will be defending the trophy we won last year! Come along to support the team and see if we can win again.

Hockley Woods. 

An early spring walk through the largest remaining area of ancient woodland in Essex. Some spring migrant birds will already be here together with butterflies on the wing. Some woodland flowers will be on display but will we see lots of Bluebells?

Essex Bats - Essex Bat Group. 

There are 10 species of Bat in Essex but could be more due to how little we actually know about our native bat populations. The Essex Bat Group will present an illustrated talk on the bats we have in Essex and the work they do to preserve them. They may even bring along some live specimens!

Langdon Hills / Dunton Plotlands. 

A great time to visit this unusual Reserve which comprises of woodland, meadows, lakes and former plotland gardens. There are thirty butterfly species at Langdon and hopefully we will see some of them during our visit. Langdon also offers seven species of wild orchids many in bloom in May.

Westley Heights - Langdon Nature Reserve. 

Join us for our annual “longest day” walk with the BNHS. This year we will be walking around a part of Langdon Hills Country Park, with ancient woodlands and flower-rich grassland meadows. There is an abundance of native trees and this is a good place for bird watching.

Meet at Westley Heights car park SS16 6HU - 7.15pm for 7.30pm start. 

Followed by refreshments at Miller & Carter, High Road, Langdon Hills, SS16 6HU.

Hadleigh/Benfleet Downs. 

A summer walk around the western end of Hadleigh Country Park looking for some of the rarer butterflies this reserve is known for. Marbled white, plus Purple and White-Letter Hairstreaks are all possible. We will also be keeping an eye out for dragonflies and damselflies including recent UK colonists the Southern Migrant Hawker and Willow Emerald Damselfly.

Wallasea Island Guided Walk. 

Join us for a guided walk by the RSPB around this fabulous reserve. At this time of year we should see plenty of migrating birds, especially waders. £2 cost per person for access to RSPB facilities which includes Tea & Coffee.

Meet in Wickford at 10.00am. 

Note meeting time may change depending on time of high tide at Wallasea.

Thames Through Time - Ian Mercer. 

Ian is a retired geologist and  the Chairman of the Essex Rock and Mineral Society. Thames Through Time reveals the story of the River by noticing sediments and landscapes in and around Essex. Ian will reveal why the Thames is an Ice Age river!

Joint meeting with Essex Field Club and Basildon Natural History Society.

Meet at 11.00am at Delmores car park SS16 6LR. 

The fungi inspection afterwards will be at Dry Street Memorial Church, Langdon Hills, SS16 5NG. 

Bring a packed lunch if you plan to stay all day at this event.

Swallow Birding tour guide Steve Grimwade takes us on a fantastic journey through Poland, Hungary, Belarus and Bulgaria showcasing the amazing variety of Birds, Butterflies & Flowers of this unspoilt region.

AGM and Christmas social. 

Celebrate the festive season with fellow members. All visitors welcome to learn more about our society and enjoy the free tasty buffet! We hold a short AGM and then enjoy the buffet. A quiz or short talk will also take place.

All indoor meetings will be held in St Andrews Church Hall, 11 London Road, Wickford, Essex, SS12 0AN.

There is adequate parking in front and behind the Church. 

Teas and Coffees are available during the interval.

Admission - Members £2.00 
                  - Non-Members £3.00 

Outdoor Meetings 
Unless otherwise specified, outings will depart from the Wickford Central Council Car Park (next to the Co-Op) at the times shown over. 
Please note that times will vary according to the location of the meeting. There are sometimes spare places in cars travelling to the different locations, so anyone needing transport can normally get a lift. In case of a change of venue or timings, it is advisable to contact Martin or Marie Singleton on the phone numbers detailed for confirmation of all outdoor meetings. 

We aim to arrive back in Wickford at around 1pm but this is of course, approximate and very much dependant on the wildlife we see on the day.
